Primed spruce and engineered wood products can perform well when kept perfectly sealed, but they're more sensitive to moisture intrusion at cut edges and fastener points than fiber cement, and any lapse in maintenance shows up faster.
James Hardie's fiber cement is cement, sand, and cellulose fiber — it doesn't burn, it doesn't rot, and it holds its factory-applied ColorPlus finish far longer than field-applied paint on wood or engineered wood.
